Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area

The Woman says we’ve been here 20 some years ago, but I don’t recall it at all. Even so, there is a new visitor center with limited hours, and all the terrain nearby has changed dramatically. While this used to be way out in the desert, it lies now pretty much in the community of Inspirada. Much like the greater Phoenix metro area, Inspirada is almost more like a separate town than being a suburb of Vegas.

The Canyon loop trail is just short of 5 miles. We got in some real scrambling, and the Woman impressed me with her venturesome attack at the trail. She ended up having to take the last scramble over a huge boulder but first, but with some encouragement and a little pushing and pulling, she made this most difficult climb.

The Canyon appears to have been a favorite art destination for the ancients. The ranger said there were over 1,700 petroglyphs in the canyon, and from what we got to peruse, we have no doubt there are that many here. All in all, it was a great hike, and one we will consider highly recommended.

Tomorrow we pack everything up and hit the road, heading north to escape the Mojave Desert Heat. We may not be back in Vegas, at least officially, until next April, if we are so blessed.

Talk to you soon!
